AWSN 2019 Scholarship Winner!

Please join us in congratulating Jasmine McDermott, the recipient of AWSN's 2019 scholarship!  Jasmine is currently studying Mechanical Engineering at the U of C. She was born in Edmonton, Alberta, and has lived in Calgary since the age of six. Her Dad is German and Cree (Sawridge First Nation), and her mom is Polish and Ukrainian. Jasmine grew up loving math and science, and developed an interest in engineering after taking pre-engineering classes in high school. She has developed her leadership skills through her involvement with the Engineering Students’ Society, where she began as a First Year Representative, was elected Vice President Academic, and is currently serving as Diversity Commissioner. Jasmine is founding an Indigenous STEM student club, with the goal of using engineering to improve quality of life in Indigenous communities and engaging Indigenous youth in STEM and also preparing to Co-Chair the 2020 CFES Conference on Diversity in Engineering at the U of C. As a member of the Dean’s Schulich Strategic Plan Committee, Jasmine was a voice for inclusion in STEM, and is currently a member of the Implementation Committee for the new Strategic Plan. She is also serving her second term on the Schulich Diversity and Inclusivity Advisory Committee (DIAC), and is involved with clubs such as WISE and the
 
Upcoming Member Program Events

November 1:  Registration opens for WISEST's Choices Conference, being held in Edmonton February 18 & 19, 2020 for grade 6 girls. Payment and forms deadline is December 2.

November 21: Join WiSER in Edmonton for for an evening of networking with STEM professionals from industry and government at the Industry Mixer.

November 23: geekStarter is hosting a Robotics and Automation Workshop in Calgary  for a day of engaging skill building activities and practical tips and insights from experienced mentors and subject matter experts.  E-mail geekStarter@mindfuel.ca for more info.

November 26: Join GeoWomen of Calgary in partnership with the CSEG-f Mentorship program for a free lunchtime presentation by Jen Russel-Houston, VP of Geoscience at Osum Oil Sands Corp and CSPG President-Elect. Come and hear Jen’s story about her path to success in the Petroleum Industry.

November 30: The SET (Science, Engineering and Technology) Conference in Edmonton is a chance for young women and non-binary students in grades 10–12 to learn what an education and career in science, engineering and technology (SET) is all about. .
 
Award and Scholarship Opportunities

Nominations are open until November 25th for NSERC Prizes for Science Promotion with a focus on people and groups who are inspirational in the way they promote science to the general public.
 
Volunteer Opportunities

BrainSTEM Alliance is looking for STEM professionals to volunteer with youth in science, engineering and entrepreneurship related programs.  Apply online or e-mail info@brainstemalliance.com for more info.

On November 1, WISEST will open volunteer opportunities for the Choices Conference to be held in Edmonton February 18 & 19, 2020.

Save the Date! The 18th Biennial Conference of the Canadian Coalition of Women in Engineering, Science, Trades, and Technology (CCWESTT) will be held in Winnipeg on May 21 to 23, 2020 at the RBC Convention Centre.

CCWESTT is accepting session idea submissions until November 15, 2019.
