Equity In Motion - 6- 12 Oct 

For many years, Alberta Women's Science Network (AWSN) has hosted events in October around Ada Lovelace Day to celebrate Women in STEM.

The tradition continues and we are hosting out 4th annual WinSTEM week Equality in Motion between Oct. 6th - 12th 2024.

We  are very excited to announce that the Alberta Government has officially declared Oct. 6 - 12th, 2024 as Women in STEM (WinSTEM) Week in Alberta!

Building Bridges - Let's Make Robots! - Oct 6

Join the Mujeres Omega Foundation on October 6 in Edmonton for a fun and interactive event where girls and moms will dive into the exciting world of robotics! In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to build and program simple robots, igniting curiosity, creativity, and teamwork. This event is designed to inspire young minds and introduce them to the limitless possibilities of STEM careers.

Athena Awards Announcement - Oct 8

During WinSTEM Week, AWSN is honored to present the prestigious Athena Outstanding Volunteer Award, celebrating the remarkable achievements of women in STEM across Alberta. These awards recognize women who have made significant contributions to their fields while inspiring and supporting the next generation of STEM leaders.

The Athena Outstanding Volunteer Award honors women who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to advancing women in STEM by creating inclusive environments. Recipients of the Athena Award are trailblazers, breaking barriers and empowering women to reach new heights in their careers. 

We are proud to announce this year’s recipients during WinSTEM Week, as we continue to highlight and celebrate the incredible women driving innovation, mentorship, and diversity in Alberta's STEM community.

University of Lethbridge : Women in STEM Social Seminar  - Oct 9

Partnering with Future Energy Systems - Oct 10

In Edmonton, we are collaborating with Future Energy Systems (FES), a program at the University of Alberta that supports cutting-edge research into energy technologies of the future. FES also leads the Energy Explorers program, where graduate students bring their research to life through interactive demos designed for the public.

On October 10, AWSN and FES will visit Thelma Chalifoux Junior High to introduce students to these dynamic Energy Explorers. The event will begin with a 45-minute assembly featuring introductions and a Q&A session, followed by two hours of engaging demos where students will have the opportunity to connect with researchers and explore innovative energy projects firsthand.

Promoting Diversity in Chemical Sciences

In Lethbridge, we are partnering with the Acid:Base Club at the University of Lethbridge, an organization committed to promoting diversity and inclusivity within the Chemical Sciences and Technology fields. Together, we will host a seminar featuring influential women from the AAFC Research Station, the University of Lethbridge, and local industry. These remarkable professionals will share their personal journeys and insights, offering invaluable perspectives on navigating and succeeding in STEM careers.

You are a Force! with Maria Marianayagam -Oct 11

We are thrilled to have AWSN board member, engineer, and author of books for young readers, Maria Marianayagam, participate in WinSTEM Week. Maria, whose work is dedicated to empowering young readers through stories celebrating STEM, diversity, and perseverance, will visit Edmonton schools to share her book, The Amazing Power of Girls. Maria will read her STEM-based, girl-empowerment story and provide presentations on why we need women in STEM, giving kids a wonderful way to engage in WinSTEM week!

Calgary Public Library Event ! - Cancelled for Oct 12th - To be Rescheduled  

Update : STEM Stars of Tomorrow event planned for Oct 12th has been cancelled due to Calgary Library cybersecurity issue and will be rescheduled.

More details will be shared once the event is rescheduled!

STEM Stars of Tomorrow: Empowering Young Readers Through Science

The Central Public Library is proud to host STEM Stars of Tomorrow in celebration of Women in

Science Week, also known as WinSTEM Week in Alberta. This event highlights the importance

of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) in shaping the future, with a particular

focus on inspiring young girls.
